Les Miserables is a novel by Victor Hugo. It has many unique characters, some with outrages traits. Characters vary from little girls, to police officers, and even ex-fugitives! These characters each have a unique role in the flow of this novel. For example, Jean Valjean is a ex-fugitive who becomes the protector of a girl who looses her parents by the name of Cosette. Jean goes through many obstacles, but does anything he can to protect Cosette. Towards the end of the novel, after many hard years of life, Cosette comes to the age where she wants to get married. Jean has grown very close to Cosette, and it is a very hard challenge for him to let her go. Jean however does what every makes her happy. She fell in love with who she thinks is the love of her life, named Marius. And after long months of thinking, Jean Valjean decides to let her marry Marius. At first, it seemed as a normal relationship, but then it took a dramatic shift. Jean as an ex-fugitive, was still hiding from authority. He didn't want to loose the trust of Marius and he admitted to being an ex-fugitive. He knew that he should keep his distance from Cosette's relationship, to keep all troubles away from Cosette's marriage. Jean couldn't live without his beloved Cosette, and died after revealing the truth.
